A Guide to Import Export Code
IEC is issued by DGFT and acts as a lifetime valid number for firms importing/exporting goods. It applies to proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, companies, trusts, HUFs and societies.
The fee for new or amended IEC is ₹500. IEC must be quoted for customs clearance, foreign remittances, and export benefits. Without IEC, importers/exporters cannot operate legally.
About IEC
An Importer-Exporter Code is mandatory unless specifically exempted. For service exports, IEC is not needed unless claiming benefits under Foreign Trade Policy. Banks also require IEC when sending or receiving money abroad for trade.
